One Hundred Magicians in Canada

One hundred Canadian magicians were asked to contribute a five second clip while social distancing at home. Here is the result, assembled by Brent and Sarah Nicholls:

The video includes appearances from friends including Rob Testa, Matt DiSero, David Merry, Harry Zimmerman, David Peck, Nicholas Wallace, Ben Train, Jonah Babins, Shawn Farquhar, Aaron Matthews and Mark Correia.

If you enjoyed the project, we’re encouraging viewers to donate to Food Banks Canada during this difficult time.

Still getting caught up from a busy summer. Here are a few photos from The Newest Trick In The Book courtesy of David Fulde.

This was back on July 30. I was joined by Dan Stapleton, LEO, Ryan Goldin and Rob Testa. The Newest Trick In The Book is a weekly open mic put on by the Toronto Magic Company at See-Scape, a nerd-themed bar in the Junction.

Ordinarily the show is hosted by the lovely and talented Jonah Babins, but he was off on his summer holiday. The show is continuing through the fall on Tuesday nights. It’s free to attend and tickets can be reserved online.

Newest Trick in the Book - July 30

A little bit of a last minute announcement. I’ve been conscripted to host The Newest Trick In The Book, a weekly show put on by the Toronto Magic Company.

The concept of the show is to provide a safe space for magical experimentation, trying and testing out new material that is still under development. (In much the same way that comedy clubs host open mic nights.) True to form, I’ll be showing off something new, and joined on stage by magicians Jeff Hinchliffe, Rob Testa, Dan Stapleton, LEO and Ajay. One of those has been performing magic since before I was born. Another one, I’ve been doing magic since before he was born. So we’re covering the entire spectrum.

This is a pay-what-you-feel-like show hosted at Toronto’s nerd-bar See-Scape (Keele & Dundas, Toronto). We have limited seating so you can reserve tickets at the link below.

Magic Tonight Returns

After a very long hiatus, I'm delighted to announce a special instalment of Magic Tonight

What eventually, after more name changes than a reasonable human could be expected to keep track of, became known as James Alan's Magic Tonight was a show that ran in downtown Toronto for twenty-eight months. It was a variety show. A long list of friends and colleagues (and the occasional special guest from out of town) would perform with me, creating a show that was never quite exactly the same from one week to the next. And when magicians get together, we really have a lot of fun!

The show has been on hiatus for about a year. Our last performance was February, 2016 — almost exactly one year ago. During that break, I've been busy with other projects, including my new show, Magic & Martini. Now, by special arrangement with the Soul City Social Club and the Social Capital Theatre, we're back teaming up for one more night of magic, Saturday, June 17, 2017.

I'll be joined by James Harrison, Canada's foremost theatrical pickpocket, and the delightfully charming and indescribably zany Rob Testa (a man who possesses no setting between off and eleven.)
